POSITION TITLE:  Superintendent - Grading - Civil Construction

DESCRIPTION:

 As a Grading Civil Superintendent you will report to the Project Manager, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Plan work methods, materials, equipment needs and work schedule for assigned project work.
  • Review daily work schedule with direct reports and updates schedule weekly.
  • Review and understand the project specifications to perform work in accordance with Contract requirements.
  • Works with work crews, field engineers and local utility companies to identify hazardous areas on jobsite.
  • Coordinate with internal equipment team and external vendors to ensure that project work is equipped with appropriate equipment and material quantities to complete production within assigned budget and schedule.
  • Forecast the work schedule to identify possible issues and provide technical or scheduling solutions to mitigate production issues and maintain budget and schedule.
  • Provide technical input to identify and resolve project risks including construction methods, material requirements, safety and schedule activities.
  • Documents daily activities and meeting notes using Company approved document methods.
  • Supervise subcontractor production and schedule regarding assigned project work. Provide work schedule and resource adjustments regarding sub-contractor activities.
  • Interact with clients to communicate schedule, avoid and resolve conflicts, and ensure work performed in accordance with project requirements. Interactions will include in-person meetings, digital communications, and phone communications
  • Lead the safety effort by recognizing and correcting hazards as soon as they are present Be the #1 safety advocate for your crew.
  • Support and promote strict adherence to safety and process controls regarding operating equipment, worksite safety and documentation requirements. Responsibility includes recommending training needs identified on jobsite.
  • Train and develop new team members in construction methods, operation of equipment, safety procedures and company policy

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience required.
  • 5+ years construction management experience required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or similar from an accredited University is desired.
  • Experienced in erosion control installation, maintenance, and documentation.
  • Experienced in water, sewer, and storm drain installation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of construction site equipment operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction site safety protocols and proven ability to enforce project safety programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local union or prevailing wage rules
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans, standards and specifications.
  • Foreperson work experience leading heavy equipment crews
  • Valid Driver’s License.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

  • Experienced construction superintendent to plan and administer a wide range of complex construction projects in the NY Metropolitan market. The successful candidate will organize and oversee construction projects throughout the construction process.
  • Work with other members of the management team to plan and execute the project in accordance with the required safety, technical requirements, schedule, and budgetary considerations.
  • Collaborate with the project manager, project engineer, consultants, Owners, and other project stakeholders. Excellent communication skills are required to achieve project goals and to project a positive image and reputation of the company.
  • Responsible for the successful progression of the project through the efficient utilization of a unionized workforce, equipment, materials, and the proper scheduling and support of sub-contractors and professional service providers. The superintendent will collaborate with the project manager toward the successful accomplishment of these goals. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Maintain and protect existing infrastructure and provide for the safety of site visitors and the public
  • Assure that all excavation work is performed in accordance with NYS Code Rule 753
  • Advanced planning of activities in conformance with the project schedule and the continuity and efficiency of work.
  • Supervises and communicates project goals to trade foremen.
  • Assure that toolbox talks are performed as required.
  • Responsible for overall job safety per the corporate and site-specific safety manual.
  • Assists in the writing and promulgation of JHA’s.
  • Manages sub-contractors and professional service providers an assures conformance with contract documents and written agreements.
  • Reviews and submits timecards as required.
  • Promotes the professional development of other members of the project team.
  • Understands projected job costs and planned production rates and reports any issues to the project manager.
  • Project professionalism and competence and foster beneficial relationships with Owners, agency representatives, and all members of the project team.
  • Proper implementation of any project SWPP and erosion control plan.
  • Assist in the accurate reporting of pay quantities, and equipment and material usage.

QUAIFICATIONS 

  • B.S. Degree in Civil, Environmental Engineering or related field with 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience with means and methods of supporting excavations.
  • Experience in Heavy Construction (site-work, roads, bridges, parks, water, and waste distribution) and other transportation infrastructure.
  • Resiliency project experience is desirable.
  • Must be capable of meeting deadlines, self-motivated, and detail oriented.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to this position.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office, and ability to learn Procore and Heavy Job.
  • Willing to work nights if required.
  • OSHA 10 certificate, OSHA 30 certificate preferred.

  • Both self-perform and/or direct others in quantity take-off for both unit price and lump sum project bidding schedules, summarizing in an Excel spreadsheet format.
  • Analyze various scopes of work and produce comprehensive unit price estimates by creating production crews and including specific equipment and materials in a project cost software program. 
  • HCSS is the current project cost estimating program utilized by firm.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management or similar from an accredited institution
  • 10+ years of relevant estimating and project management experience. 
  • 5 or more years’ experience estimating for heavy civil projects
  • Previous estimating experience on projects over $100M in value
  • Good communication skills to effectively solicit and work with individual project owner’s representatives, material suppliers and subcontractors in pre-bid estimate preparations and post-bid negotiations.

  • Senior Estimator specializing in structural steel, inclusive of heavy civil & building structures. 
  • The primary tasks would be providing quantity takeoffs and pricing of structural aspects for Heavy Highway, Civil Infrastructure, & Vertical Construction Project Estimates.
  • Conduct initial analysis of drawings and specifications to ensure required documentation is present and determine scope of work.
  • This position would receive direction from and work closely with the Vice President of Estimating 
  • Develop full-scope estimates based on Bid-Build, Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build or CM/GC construction documents
  • Analyze bid documents and understand risk and opportunities and articulate those to management.

SUMMARY

An experienced construction superintendent to plan and administer a wide range of complex construction projects in the NY Metropolitan market. The successful candidate will organize and oversee construction projects throughout the construction process.

The successful candidate will work with other members of the management team to plan and execute the project in accordance with the required safety, technical requirements, schedule, and budgetary considerations.

The project superintendent will collaborate with the project manager, project engineer, consultants, Owners, and other project stakeholders. Excellent communication skills are required to achieve project goals and to project a positive image and reputation of the company.

The superintendent is responsible for the successful progression of the project through the efficient utilization of a unionized workforce, equipment, materials, and the proper scheduling and support of sub-contractors and professional service providers. RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Maintain and protect existing infrastructure and provide for the safety of site visitors and the      public.
  • Assure that all excavation work is performed in accordance with NYS Code Rule 753
  • Advanced planning of activities in conformance with the project schedule and the continuity and efficiency of work.
  • Supervises and communicates project goals to trade foremen.
  • Assure that toolbox talks are performed as required.
  • Responsible for overall job safety per the corporate and site-specific safety manual.
  • Assists in the writing and promulgation of JHA’s.
  • Manages sub-contractors and professional service providers an assures conformance with contract documents and written agreements.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES

  • Responsible for overseeing the planning, scheduling and coordination of all daily activities of the Southern Division Operation and other areas as required: service, meter reading, distribution, and leak detection staff.
  • In conjunction with the Director, prepares and oversees preparation and adherence to departmental expense budgets.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of all systems (mains, hydrants, valves, services, blow offs and air vents), including preventative and reactive maintenance including flushing and leak detection.
